When Peet returned to San Francisco he sold Santana to M. Lloyd Carter, a "drama therapist" from Marin County. Carter had it in his head that he, too, was going to sail her around the world.
This never took place, as it most certainly would have destroyed he boat. After many years of hard sailing and little maintenance the engine room was a pit full of grease and old empty oilcans. Forty-four of her 125 frames or "ribs" were broken. A plank that had popped off in the Pitcairn Islands had been repaired in a shoddy manner.
In short, the boat was a wreck and needed extensive repairs before she could sail across San Francisco Bay, much less around the world. Fortunately Tom and Ted Eden persuaded Carter that the smartest thing for him to do would be to sell them the boat, which he did.
