The architectural firm of Sparkman & Stephens is one of the oldest and most respected names in the sailing world. In the book "The Best of the Best", S & S designs are described as "always swift, always sea kindly and always of great beauty. Truly they were and are the best."

Sparkman and Stephens design number 59, Santana, easily fulfills this praise. Any yacht designed by S & S also carries a reputation of being extraordinarily well built due to the attention to detail that Sparkman and Stephens themselves put into their design drawings.
Santanas original drawings and construction specifications were sought out prior to her refit. Fortunately many of S & Ss original designs are kept in storage in a museum, including those of the 1934 design for Santana, drawn on paper that was in final stages of deterioration! Carefully made copies were invaluable in Santanas restoration. The new foremast, leaded glass doors and many other details were recreated exactly to the original plans.
