February 26th
The Wooden Hull Association played host for the "One More Time Regatta" February 26, 2005 in Marina Del Rey. As the name suggests, the event is meant to lure the classic yachts of yesteryear out of their protected berths and race around the buoys "One More Time".

"SANTANA" was graciously included on this years invite list. Having left San Francisco in December for the warmer, but not dryer, climate this would be our second race of the winter. Mike and Kelly Priest, who have been excellent "godparents" for "SANTANA" in Southern California, assisted in getting us organized. We were thrilled to have John McPherson and Eddy Collins aboard, from the sloop "NOMADESS" the beautiful 72' David Pedrick design. Also aboard was Hal Hanel, Olympic gold and silver medalist in the Starboat Class. Rounding out the crew included Doug Steele, Eva Cohen and the Priest’s.

The day was warm and dry but most importantly, there was wind! Our collective strategy was to start the race "slightly" late so that we’d be at full speed as we crossed the line. Well, we certainly achieved that goal and were embarrassingly late for the start! (The skipper took full responsibility) We then struggled most of the first half of the race to recover. Once the upwind leg was behind us we set all 6 sails, did a spectacular reach-to-reach jibe with everything up and made up a lot of distance. We carried all but the spinnaker to the finish.

Thanks to Eva's foresight we had champagne ready to open once we were safely back in our slip. We celebrated new friends and a beautiful day. Later that evening we were presented a silver platter for 1st place in the Schooner Division. This was very unexpected and only served to top off a perfect day sailing on Santa Monica Bay.
